Veterans In Politics- Season 3, Episode 1  with  Stephanie Peacock MP- Shadow Veterans Minister

In this first for a new season, Jonny sits down with Shadow Veterans Minister Stephanie Peacock MP.  They talk about the role of the Shadow Defence team, Steph's efforts reaching out to the veterans community and her career to date.

About Stephanie:
Stephanie was elected to serve as the Member of Parliament for Barnsley East in the 2017 General Election. She was re-elected in December 2019. Stephanie studied History at Queen Mary University of London, and received a master’s degree from University College London. A qualified teacher, she taught History to secondary school students before working in adult education across Yorkshire. After this, Stephanie spent four years as a Political Officer for the GMB trade union. An active member of the Labour Party for many years, Stephanie served for four years on the party’s Governing body, the National Executive Committee, and for a decade on the party’s policy making body, the National Policy Forum.

Since her election to Parliament, Stephanie has served on the International Trade, Science & Technology, and the Women & Equalities Select Committees. She was a member of the Opposition Whips Office and Shadow Cabinet Office & Office of Veterans’ Affairs. Stephanie is currently the Shadow Veterans minister.

Stephanie is the Parliamentary Chair of Hope not Hate, an advocacy group that campaigns against racism and fascism. One of her key Parliamentary campaigns has been to increase the maximum sentences for those convicted of causing death by dangerous driving. Stephanie has also called for more support for retired miners, she held a Parliamentary debate on this issue and has lobbied the Government to reform the Mineworkers Pension Scheme. As a former trade union officer, workers’ rights are very important to Stephanie. She introduced a Private Members Bill to improve the employment rights of Agency Workers and in 2019 she was granted an Urgent Parliamentary Question to press the Government on why they had suspended the National Minimum wage naming scheme. The scheme names employers who break the law on paying the minimum wage. 

Stephanie has completed two of the Parliamentary Armed Forces Scheme with the Army and the Royal Air Force.

She is a Patron of BIADS a local Barnsley charity helping people with dementia.

A member of the Women’s Parliamentary Football Team and a keen runner, she completed the London Marathon in 2019.

Stephanie lives in Darfield near Barnsley.
